Surface Design

When it comes to surface design, one designer brand I was amazed by is The Blonds. The Blonds are made up of dynamic duo and power couple, David and Philippe Blond who are American designers based out of New York. The couple have been together since the early 2000's where they also first started their label in 2004. Philippe serves as the label's muse, he also dresses up and walks every fashion show. They are famous for their handmade corsets, but I remember them most for their surface design and the fact that Philippe as one of the designers still makes time to walk down the runway along with the models. Their embellishments and fabric manipulations are out of this world and absolutely unforgettable. My first time seeing their designs, I screamed at more than a few of the looks coming down the runway because they were so amazing to me. This is also the route I want to take as a designer as well as far as design aesthetic. The Blonds create costume pieces that only the brave, daring a true fashionistas could pull off. Also Philippe designs pieces that he himself would wear, that is also the direction I want to go into. I want to create garments that I would wear myself. Below are some photos from the Blonds RTW Spring 2016 collection. You can see some of the beautiful embellishments added to their fabrics. One other thing I noticed is that the gold in these garments look like actual heavy solid gold, but as you watch the fashion show, you can see the movement in those garments. They beautifully manipulated their fabrics to make it look like solid gold.
